So I did the work and got the day off. Spent half of it asleep and eventually I staggered in to town to watch Superman Returns. I liked it. I liked it a lot. It's a tad long and there are a few scenes they could have cut or removed completely, but I doubt they could have done a better sequel if they'd tried. And I was surprised at just how much it was a sequel too.

I have another late night - this time it was arranged ages ago - to look forward to. I am going to be very very sleepy bunny tomorrow. But it gets me another day off at some point.

So...Pirates of the Caribbean. Tis a fine film indeed. Not nearly enough of Keira running around in her skimpies though. But plenty of sword fighting, pirates and everything else you'd be expecting.

Oh and there is a scene at the end of the credits. If you can stomach sitting through them all.

*poing*

Wow. I feel so *poing* today. I dragged myself out to the cinema last night and as always it's put me in a really good mood. I saw The Lake House. Hmmm....Sandra Bullock. I quite liked it. It's about a woman who moves out of a lake house and leaves the next occupant a note to forward on her mail. Except somehow the house's mailbox is occupying two points in time - the present and two years in the past. And the previous occupant gets the note instead. They start writing to each other, fall in love and cause all kinds of temporal paradoxes.

I also saw Fearless. Kinda bit of a counterpoint to the previous one I guess :) It's a historical recount of a martial artist who took part in a fight that gave China hope and respect in itself when it was being overrun by foreign devils. The fight scenes were great - lots of bone crunching noises and scenes of people having bits of themselves broken quite visibly. A good example is where someone gets punched so hard that their shoulderblade is shattered o_O

The cinema was practically empty which I find surprising. It's got A/C. I'd have thought it'd be a good place to spend an evening. The two films had at most 10 people in each although amussingly the first was mostly women and the second men.

I got the same cute chatty girl serving me icecream as last time I went I think. I really should make some effort to remember their names so I can recognise them the next time(s).

So...yet another weekend has gone by. Friday was the local Requiem game. Yet another new Prince. Imagine he won't last more than a couple of months before someone with some real clout comes along and smacks him down. It did give me a chance to show off my new polar bear form though.

Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] gmplatypus came over to continue her much needed movie education and we watched Total Recall and Batman. Which has given me the idea to show her The Witches of Eastwick at some point. Afterwards I watched Doctor Who - at last an episode that isn't set on Earth. Cthulhu fans will definitely like this one. Then I had a nap before coming in to work for 2am to do important maintainance. Completely wrecked my sleep patterns though as I got up at 8 to go watch X-Men 3 with folk.

After that I bimbled over to HoP for the Unknown Armies game which was mostly fun. Got to be useful for a change, but then an evil person I don't want to meet showed up so I ended up hiding in the kitchen for a fair chunk of the game.

Very sleepy this morning. Might have to get some more redbull to keep myself functioning.

One of the DVDs I got and watched at the weekend was Aeon Flux. It's actually quite good. Not the greatest film ever, but certainly not in the same league as Catwoman. Far from it. It's got a plot. With twists. And action. And scatily clad young ladies. It's even got the other agent with hands for feet too from the TV series.

themadone: (Default)

I watched Night Watch last night. I'm not entirely sure what to make of it yet. The overall plot was quite good, but the film was just far too confusing. I'm not sure whether this was because of the English dub or whether it's cos it's just not meant to make any sense or not. I think I'm going to watch it again in Russian with the subtitles on to see if it's any better.

Completely unrelated, I found this site where they're trying to recruite 5000 people to become part of a tribe. The tribe will be building an eco-friendly settlement on an island off Fiji that members of the tribe can go visit and help work on the settlement. Or just laze around. It sounds a bit like a cross between the Shipwrecked shows and a timeshare holiday.

One thing that doesn't look so great about it all, is that currently it's only expected to last 3 years from the moment they get their 5000th member. Cos they don't actually own the island, they're just borrowing off the local owner. I'd be mildly interested if it wasn't for this part, cos I think it'd be kinda cool to get myself an island and start a new community of like minded folk on it. The potential for it to just fizzle out after a short while just makes it not seem worth it.

That has to be one of the most random weekends I've ever had. Saturday - where on earth did that weather spring (teehee) out from? The scorching hot sunshine took me completely by surprise when I went for a bimble shopping. Meant the flat was too hot when I got home too, which I guess is probably good for my cactii though, but not for me.

And then Sunday the weather returned for normal - traditional British national holiday weather - and it was rainy. Which wouldn't have been so bad, if I didn't have an ardeous journey to play Awakening. Stupid rail replacement service. But...if I hadn't gotten back as late as I did, I'd have not randomly bumped in to [livejournal.com profile] gmplatypus. She's back a week early for a couple of nights cos there are some training courses she has to do in the area.

Figuring it'd be a bit sucky heading up to Brunel and spending the evening staring at 4 walls, I suggested she come over and watch a DVD. Which was an interesting situation - putting someone who has seen hardly any films in front of a DVD collection as large as mine and asking what she wanted to watch. Tried initially making a list of films, but it became apparent we'd end up with another shorter, but still really long list. So I randomly plucked something out of the air - The Terminator. Which went down well, although I've discovered she gets grossed out by cyborgs cutting themselves up.

Awakening was interesting. I was inserted into the intenstinal tract of a giant bug to help lay a bomb. It was all very Evolution meets Starship Troopers. Think the character is starting to gel in my head too. Now just need to hope the game gets sanctioned soon so I can go visit other games.

Finally got around to seeing The Island last night. I was surprised to see the guy that plays Neelix in it. Think he looks much better with the makeup on. Very enjoyable film if a little predictable. But the basic premise of the film doesn't really allow much scope for adding plot twists.

I also had a really interesting idea for a new project. Some kind of interactive artwork that "mutates" whenever someone new looks at it. And depending on who looks at it, it mutates differently. Except I can't think of what it should be. I'm thinking some kind of alife that grows or changes. Will need to give it some more thought.

ION: Yay! Pub tonight. Although [livejournal.com profile] majic13 won't be there this week either and if last week is anything to go by, his lack presence makes the pub very empty and quiet :( :)

I think Coke have finally realised that we might actually enjoy the taste of different flavours of coke. I've just seen full fat coke with lime. Surprisingly not that different in taste to the diet incarnation unlike how things turned out with the lemon ones.

Watched Transporter 2 last night. Very silly film with lots of insane driving and even more insane leaping about with guns. And there's a crazy lady who likes running around in her skimpies shooting people with twin automatic pistol thingies. A bit like a slutty Lara Croft.

themadone: (Default)

That was a fun weekend. A couple of good parties. Plenty of slobbing in front of the TV watching GITS:SAC (still only half way through). And my first Awakening game as a player.

It's only been marred by the clocks changing and screwing up my sleep pattern. Or at least I had a really rough night of intermitten sleep

I also watched Tomb Raider and Memento. The latter I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. It's about a guy who can't commit anything to short term memory any more, trying to track down the guy who raped and murdered his wife. He writes himself notes and tattoos some of them on to his body.

The various scenes are played out in reverse, which is very messed up. You see how the film ends and then it slowly works it's way backwards to the beginning. And I have to admit, the beginning really surprised me.

I'm wondering how feasible it'd be to play as a character concept in some game. Probably not a very long term or serious one I'd have thought.

Annoyingly, LJ seems to not have heard that over in England the clocks have changed. Might need to fiddle with my timezone to find GMT that has BST on the right date.

So far things have been pretty good since I last posted. I suspect things are unlikely to get worse in the short time whilst I write this entry though :)

I saw V for Vendetta last night which was a mighty film (OMG! That outfit! :D). And I had icecream too. I wonder why they don't sell rum'n'raisin icecream in stores? Today my latest order from Amazon arrived. I now have volume 6 of SG-1 to make up for the copy that had the wrong disc in it. And I got the Road of Kings book for Dark Ages too on a whim.

Tonight will no doubt be fun as it's pub night and I will see lots of shiny people I've not seen in the past couple of days. And since I'm not on call now I can drink too. w00t. Although not too much as there's plenty of drinking planned for the weekend too.

themadone: (Default)

I went on my (not as frequent as they used to be) frequent spending sprees on Saturday. Many shinies were bought. Watched some Aeon Flux. Not really convinced by it. Played Dark Ages. Didn't get to kill Tremere. Was lazy at Fight Club. Ate much cake. Watched GITS: Innocence. Think I prefered the first one or GITS: SAC. Also watched Howls Moving Castle which was mighty and left me in a very soppy mood.

themadone: (Default)

That was a pretty good weekend. Started off with booze, pizza and Kingdom of Heaven on Friday with the re-enactment lot. Saturday I wasted playing Fahrenheit which is an utterly mental game. The control system bugs me a tad, but in some ways it's a lot less taxing doing the action sequences than, say, the Silent Hill series.

The control system in more detail )

Playing the game meant I skipped out on food for most of the day, so I pigged out on pizza and watched The Chronicles of Riddick with [livejournal.com profile] darklittlefox. He is such a ninja - definitely looking forward to getting more of his films.

On Sunday I went to "fight club" and had a few bouts against [livejournal.com profile] gmplatypus, a few goes in the circle of treachery and then wussed out and watched. On the way back I bought Shadow of the Colossus too which occupied most of my afternoon. I don't think it's as immersive as Ico, but it's damn good fun trying to work out how to scrabble up the side of this mahoosive beastie so you can stick a sword in it's head.

I also watched Hercules in New York which is truely an awful film. So awful you have to watch it just to laugh at it. The fight scenes are a joke - especially the one where Arnie is fighting a (guy in a) bear (suit). And they've got most of the names wrong too. Most of the gods' names they used were the Roman versions despite them claiming to be greek.

Tonight should be interesting. It's the last elections for the year - GameSoc. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out and whether any of the renegade chess players show up and try to take over.

themadone: (Default)

Well that's another 10 titles to add to my collection. 6 of them I've never ever heard of before. Looking on IMDb some of them don't get slated that much - a couple even score 6 out of 10!

I also got Ocean's 11 & The Man With One Red Shoe which weren't going for 97p, but I figured I'd get them anyway. And 2 of them were from the cartoon show of Evolution! I can't believe they made it into a cartoon.

I might have got more, but I was grossed out by the smell of poo coming from the woman stacking more films onto the shelves *yucks*

themadone: (Default)

w00t! My 4 DVD cases have arrived. Seperately. Amazon seem to have an aversion to shipping things in one container these days. Now all I need is some free time to put all the discs in the cases.

Oh and they've shipped the new Mage: The Shiny books too! Uberw00t!

Almost got the chance to work from home today. Big Boss dude sent out an email telling everyone to stay at home cos of freezing rain...in our head office in Canada. It just happened to be raining over here too. Probably not freezing as such, but it was pretty cold.

In other news I have switched utility providers. Southern Electric came around to convince me to switch to them under the guise that they'd heard that some customers had been billed incorrectly. By pure chance they happened to find the one person that this was the case. Although you have to wonder since it's them that read the meters if they didn't organise the bill screw up in the first place. Anyhow. Being uber lazy it took him hardly any effort to convince me to switch.

And he even read my gas meter too which is the first time in over a year it's been looked at. Scottish Power believe my gas meter to read ~3500 when in actual fact it's ~2000. At best guess based on the last bill they owe me about £1000. w00t! That'll help fund my DVD addiction a lot.

Speaking of DVDs, I've finally gotten around to watching The Pacifier. Which was a lot better than people might have expected. Vin Diesel was very good at shouting at small kids and kicking evil ninja butt! No sign of him playing D&D though. I wonder what the kids reactions to him playing were. I wonder if he forced them to play like Dame Judi

Also Tescos are selling DVDs for under a quid. Looks like utter cheese mostly though - only had a brief chance to look on the way to work. I shall have to have better look tomorrow or something.

The weekend was on the whole very odd. As far as my brain was concerned it consisted of at least 2 Sundays. Friday I didn't do much except watch a lot of TV. I finally got to the watch the IT Crowd which I found to be amusing.

On Sunday (#1) I slobbed around the place and didn't really do much. I watched Monk which is always good fun. The evening was spent playing boardgames at Chez Plot.

On Sunday (#2) I staggered up the hill to fight club and swung a sword around a lot. Didn't feel I was as good as I could be. Staggered down the hill again afterwards and had a nap as I was very tired. I suspect this nap is the cause of why I had a really poor nights sleep - couldn't really get off. Once I eventually un-napped I spent it in front of the TV, although there wasn't really much on worth watching as I'd slept through it all. So I watched Mystery Men.

I was disturbed by a convo earlier. My female co-workers were discussing their most lusted after superheros. They tried engaging the male co-workers by trying to get our opinions on female superheros, but mostly we just watched them being uber geeky.

Tonight I have GameSoc to look forward to, although I'm expecting to get my ear chewed off for having to pull out of playing Diablo 2. I've no idea what level the rest of the party are, but I've not had time to even catch up to where they were when I finished the first session. But I think I'd rather play board/card games anyway.

Wow. [livejournal.com profile] cryx's zomromcom Shaun of the Dead got voted #3 best comedy film ever. Coo. Not too surprised that Life of Brian came first though.

ION I did another me-me

Bah. Back at work after a lovely almost week off. Thankfully it being the run up to xmas it's lovely and quiet. If only cos most of the office is already away on their holidays. Saw Kong which was enormousmonkeytastic. Played and lost some boardgames. Saturday was Dark Ages. Finally got shot of the scourgely part of my current mission from the Prince - now to implement the second and final phase. Assuming I remember to do a downtime.

Looking forward to moot tonight.

themadone: (Default)

Saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for the first time yesterday. It's a lot better than the old one. I can't remember the book very well, but I'd say it's a lot closer than the far too sugary Gene Wilder version. Ronald Dalh's books were always a little dark and quirky and the old singing and dancing one was waaaaay too bright and cheerful.

Somehow managed to forget I was meant to be doing [livejournal.com profile] darklittlefox's game. No idea when it was arranged, but I went into auto pilot and pootled up the hill ladened down with games to play at GameSoc instead. They spent some of their budget on Saturday and now have Puerto Rico! w00t! I tried showing it to people but we ran out of time. But I think people were enjoying it so maybe next week I'll start a bit earlier and we'll finish a game.
